AAdhar Bill : Verbal war between Govt and opposition

| | Mar 16, 2016, at 08:53 pm
New Delhi, Mar 16 (IBNS) The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a verbal war between the Government and the opposition over the Aadhaar Bill, which was controversially passed in the Lok Sabha last week. Raising objection to the proposal being passed as a money bill in the Lok Sabha, CPI(M) member Sitaram Yechury said, "I am questioning the competence of this house to legislate the bill."
Taking on the opposition, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, "If the principle purpose is money spent out of consolidated fund of India in particular manner and machinery is created for spending that money, the machinery is an incidental vehicle, therefore it is a money bill."

The opposition wants the bill to be sent back to the Lok Sabha.

The BJP-led government used its majority in the Lok Sabha to pass the Aadhaar Bill as a "money bill" last Friday.

The Rajya Sabha must discuss a money bill within 14 days of it being officially received by the house or it will be "deemed passed."

The government had earlier rejected the opposition's  demand to extend the sitting of the Rajya Sabha by two days to discuss the bill.

The bill gives legal sanction to the unique identification number or Aadhaar as a single window to distribute subsidy and welfare schemes to citizens.
