Activist Irom Sharmila released from jail
Imphal, Jan 22 (IBNS): Manipuri human rights activist Irom Sharmila, who is on indefinite fast since November 2000, was on Thursday night released from judicial custody.
Amnesty International India on Thursday called for ending the "farcical cycle" of her arrests and re-arrests as according to it, Sharmila is leading a peaceful protest.
A local court on Thursday ruled that the prosecution has failed to give any evidence to prove that she is trying to commit suicide.
It then ordered that Sharmila be discharged in the case.
Sharmila, since 2000, has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding revocation of the Armed Force Special Protection Act (AFSPA).
The 42-year-old activist known as the ‘Iron Lady of Manipur’ earlier had wanted to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeal the Act that had been called “draconian” by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh though a reform has long been dilly-dallied.
Sharmila, who was being fed through her nose at JNIMS Hospital in Imphal, launched her fast unto death in 2000 after 10 civilians were killed by Assam Rifles personnel at Malom area near Imphal airport.
