After BJP’s Bengal win, Kolkata Police unfollow Mamata and Abhishek, adds Modi and Amit Shah on X
Kolkata/IBNS: Days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) 15-year rule in West Bengal, the official X account of Kolkata Police underwent a noticeable change.
The police handle unfollowed former chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
At the same time, it began following Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs and newly sworn-in chief minister Suvendu Adhikari.
The digital shift coincided with broader administrative changes across Kolkata following the formation of the BJP’s first government in the state.
The Kolkata Police X account is currently following 42 accounts, including senior leaders and institutions associated with the new government at the Centre and in West Bengal.
The updated list includes Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Suvendu Adhikari, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Union Home Ministry.
The change became visible after the BJP secured 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly and formally assumed power in the state.
The results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were declared on May 4, with the BJP registering a landmark victory.
BJP takes charge
On Saturday, Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first chief minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party at a ceremony held at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.
The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders.
Mamata avoids 'ex-CM' tag
As of 12 pm on May 9, Mamata Banerjee’s X account and Facebook page continued to describe her as the Chief Minister of West Bengal.
The designation remained unchanged despite the swearing-in of the new chief minister and the transfer of power to the BJP government.
Security scaled down
Following the election results, Kolkata Police reduced the security arrangements outside Mamata Banerjee’s residence in south Kolkata.
Police removed the “Caesar barricades” from the entrance to the lane leading to her house.
During her tenure as chief minister, visitors to the area were routinely asked to identify themselves and state the purpose of their visit.
Residents of the locality had reportedly been required to carry identity cards while moving through the zone.
A notification issued by Lalbazar, the headquarters of the Kolkata Police, stated that no additional security deployment would remain outside the outgoing chief minister's residence.
However, sources indicated that Mamata Banerjee would continue to receive security cover in accordance with protocols applicable to former chief ministers.
Security deployment was also withdrawn from outside Abhishek Banerjee’s house at Harish Mukherjee Road and office on Camac Street.
Police scanners and other equipment were removed from his residence in Santiniketan as part of the post-election changes.
The revisions to security arrangements came alongside the Kolkata Police X account’s decision to unfollow both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.
