Kabul: A passenger plane crashed in north Afghanistan's Badakhshan province, local television channel Tolonews reported Sunday, citing Zabihullah Amiri, an official of the provincial department of information and culture.

The official added that a team has been sent to the Topkhana area of the Kuran-wa-Munjan district on the crashed plane.

The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has clarified that the passenger airplane that crashed in Afghanistan's mountains does not belong to any Indian airlines.

"The unfortunate plane crash that has just occurred in Afghanistan is neither an Indian Scheduled Aircraft nor a Non Scheduled (NSOP)/Charter aircraft. It is a Moroccan-registered small aircraft," the Civil Aviation Ministry said on Sunday in a post on X.

"More details are awaited," it further said.

A local media outlet in Afghanistan had claimed that the passenger aircraft that crashed belonged to an Indian carrier.

As per media reports, the unfortunate incident took place in a remote mountainous region of Afghanistan.
