Ajay Maken steps down as Delhi Congress chief

| @indiablooms | Jan 04, 2019, at 09:46 am

New Delhi, Jan 4 (IBNS): Senior party leader Ajay Maken has stepped down as the Congress Delhi chief, reports said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has accepted his resignation,  sources told NDTV.

He was made the chief of the party in the national capital four years ago after the Congress suffered a defeat in the Assembly polls.

The Aam Aadmi Party had ended ex-Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit's 15-year Congress run in the national capital in 2013.

In a Hindi tweet, Maken wrote on Friday: "After the 2015 Assembly polls, in the past four years as Delhi Congress president, I have received immense love and support from party workers, media and Rahul Gandhi. It was not an easy task in such difficult circumstances. I am grateful."

Maken is a two-time parliamentarian and a former union minister of the nation.

He had replaced Arvinder Singh Lovely as the Delhi Congress chief.

Lok Sabha polls:

Maken resigned from the position just months before the country is going to elect a new Prime Minister. The Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to be held this year.

The polls are significant at a time when the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party suffered major defeats in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan in the last assembly polls of 2018. The Congress returned to power in the states by removing the BJP government.
