Guwahati, Sept 20 (IBNS) : Assam sounded high alert after intelligence reports said that possible strikes by Al-Qaeda and other Islamic fundamentalist groups in the state during the upcoming Durga Puja festival.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that security forces had received intelligence inputs over possibilities of major strikes by Al-Qaeda in the state during the Durga Puja festival.

“The terrorist group has planned to strike in the state during the Durga puja and we have already taken all preventive measures across the state,” the Assam CM said during a press conference held here.

The Assam CM also said that Al-Qaeda is trying to set up their bases in the state and had “tacit understating” with United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent).

“We have got some information that Al-Qaeda is trying to set up base in the state,” Gogoi said.

“The global insurgent group had earlier too tried to link with the rebel groups of North East region including Assam,” Gogoi said.

“I think, Al-Qaeda has already linked with ULFA(I). Even if there is no direct link as of now, they have in tacit understanding,” the Assam CM said.
