Amit Shah expresses 'people's doubt' over multi-party democracy, Congress, CPI-M hit back
New Delhi: The Opposition has hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after its national president Amit Shah, who also happens to be the country's Home Minister, stirred a row by expressing "people's doubt" over the multi-party democracy just days after giving a call for a national language.
Giving an address, Shah on Tuesday said, "70 years after Independence, there was a doubt in every person's mind that our multi-party democracy has failed or not. People were doubting whether the multi-party democracy will ever be able to achieve the goals which were set by our Founding Fathers."
Hitting back at Shah, Congress leader Anand Sharma tweeted, "HM Amit Shah’s statement belittling India’s multi-party democracy is shocking & indicative of a thinking which, if accepted, will deliver a body blow to federal India. Given India’s rich diversity, only a multi-party system can be inclusive & representative of the Union of India."

Stating the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is itself a multi-party alliance, Sharma urged political leaders- Nitish Kumar, Prakash Singh Badal, Uddhav Thackeray- who are the saffron party's allies to think over Shah's comment.
He said, "Questioning the collective wisdom of the founding fathers of the constitution is unacceptable. Reminding the BJP that NDA itself is a multi-party alliance and its member parties have been formed governments in states."

Slamming the BJP, CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury tweeted, "Yet another declaration of intent of replacing our secular democratic republic with the RSS project of a fascistic Hindutva Rashtra. This murder of our constitutional ideals and values will be fought back."

On last Saturday, Shah, on the occasion of Hindi Diwas, gave a call to make Hindi as the language of the nation inviting criticism from the Opposition.
He had said, "India is a country of multiple languages and each of them have significance. But there must be one language for the whole nation which will give India an identity at the world stage. It is only widely-spoken Hindi language can bind the whole nation."
