Chennai/IBNS: Twenty-nine workers- all women- fainted after the ammonia gas leaked at a fish plant in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district on Saturday, media reports said.

A fire rescue officer, who went to the plant, also fainted upon inhaling the gas.

All 29 workers as well as the rescue officer were rushed to the hospital.

Preliminary investigation has claimed the leakage in one of the ammonia gas containers occurred due to an electrical short condition occurred last night.

An inquiry by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Forensic officials is underway.
