Anti-national slogan-posters at JU: VC Suranjan Das meets Governor

Kolkata, Feb 19 (IBNS): Kolkata's prestigious Jadavpur University (JU)'s Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das and registrar Pradeep Ghosh on Friday met West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi to discuss on the present unrest situation at the university.
After meeting the Governor, JU VC Suranjan Das told the media, "We discussed with the Governor and university's Chancellor Keshari Nath Tripathi. He has sought a report from me. I will definitely submit it before him following the Executive Council (EC)'s meeting, which will be held on Monday."

"Jadavpur University has a tradition to maintain autonomy. Our campus is a place for debate and discussion. We always practice freedom of expression and freedom of speech here," he added.

When he was asked on the controversial slogan-posters at the university, Das said, "If few fringe elements shouted some 'unfortunate' slogans, the entire JU community should not be put on blame. Our students told me that they did not shout any anti-national slogan that day."

"This is not a tradition of Jadavpur University to file an FIR against its students. Our university has own rules and regulations, by which we will solve this problem," Suranjan Das further said.

Meanwhile, appealing for an immediate action into the JU issue, BJP's national secretary Rahul Sinha on Friday met the Governor and put forward his demands.

Protesting against the arrest of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, few students of Jadavpur University on Tuesday held a torch rally in the city, where slogans in favour of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and separatist Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani were raised.

A day after the incident, few posters against the hanging of Afzal Guru and 1993 Mumbai serial blast convict Yakub Memon were also spotted on Wednesday inside JU campus. Posters demanding freedom for Kashmir, Nagaland and Manipur were also found there.

The JNU is currently facing protests and counter protests with the police cracking down on students over the anti-India slogans raised earlier to mark the death anniversary of Parliament Attack convict Afzal Guru on its campus in the national capital.
