Ashok Gehlot triggers row, says Ram Nath Kovind appointed as President for his caste

Jaipur, Apr 17 (IBNS): Triggering row ahead of the second phase of Lok Sabha polls, Rajasthan Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday said Ram Nath Kovind was appointed as the President for his caste, media reports said.

Speaking at a meeting, Gehlot, who assumed his office after Congress wrested power in Rajasthan in December last year, said Kovind was elected so that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could appease the Koli community ahead of the assembly elections in Gujarat.

The senior Congress leader said BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani could not become the President with the election of Kovind.

Gehlot also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lowered the level of public discourse in the country.

Several opposition parties had nominated former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as their candidate for the Presidential polls.

However, Kumar was defeated by Kovind.

The second phase of 17th Lok Sabha polls will be held on Apr 18.
