Assam absconding legislator arrested for rape charge

Guwahati, Oct 4 (IBNS) : Assam legislator Gopinath Das, who was allegedly involved in a rape case of a minor domestic helper, was arrested on Sunday, police said.

The absconding legislator of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) was arrested by Kamrup (Rural) district police led by SP Indrani Baruah from Hajo area of the lower Assam district on Sunday evening.

A minor domestic helper had lodged a complaint against the MLA of Boko assembly constituency that she was raped inside a car of Gopinath Das in Guwahati last month.

Police had registered a case against the legislator at Boko police station in last month.

"Gopinath Das was absconding in past a month, but police managed to capture him today, " Kamrup (Rural) district SP Indrani Baruah said.
