Assam flood : Over 97,000 people of 6 districts affected as a portion of railway bridge washes away in Dhemaji district

Guwahati, Sept 15 (IBNS) : Assam flood situation worsened after flood waters have submerged 264 villages in six districts of the state and affected over 97,000 people in the state.

Water level of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries is flowing above the danger level marks at many places in the state following incessant rains in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 97,000 people of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Dibrugarh, Barpeta and Chirang district have been affected in the current wave flood.

Over 47,000 people have been affected alone in Dhemaji district while 34,000 people affected in Lakhimpur district.

A major portion of a railway bridge in Dhemaji district was washed away by surging water of Jiadhal river.

Overflowing water of Lali river had breached a dyke at No – 1 Tari Majgaon area and submerged several villages.

On the other hand, two people died in the current wave of flood in Dhemaji district in past 72 hours.

According to the ASDMA reports, 52 people died in flood and landslides in the state this year so far.

Water levels of Brahmaputra river is flowing above danger level marks in Neamatighat in Jorhat district, Tezpur in Sonitpur district.

In Guwahati, water level of the Brahmaputra river has increased 48 cm in last 48 hours.

According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), water level of the Brahmaputra river has increased 1 cm per hour.

Sadiqul Hoque, CWC employee of Guwahati  said that, water level of the Brahmaputra river has gradually increased and rising 1 cm per hour at DC Court in Guwahati.
