Awaiting verdict in Jaya DA case, TN govt delays Chennai Metro Rail project

Chennai, May 10 (IBNS): The Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister O Panneerselvam has been now put under severe criticism for delaying the commencement of the Chennai's Metro Rail project.
The project was initially scheduled to begin its operations in October 2014.

Now that the phase one  of the metro project is finally nearing completion, the government is not announcing an inauguration date of the same on account of Jayalalithaa disproportionate assets case's verdict by the Karnataka High Court.

The metro rail service, which will run a 10-kilometer stretch between Koyembedu and Alandur, has undergone several trials over the last few months.

However, it is awaiting the final clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

Opposition parties like the DMK is alleging that the state government is wasting public money by deliberately delaying the inauguration.

DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan told media, "The project should have been completed and the service should have started. I don't know why they are delaying it."
