Babri demolition: SC to decide today if Advani, others to face trial

New Delhi, Apr 19 (IBNS): The Supreme Court is likely to decide whether Bharatiya Janata Party leaders like LK Advani should be tried for criminal conspiracy in connection with the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhaya in 1992.

The apex court is likely to rule on on whether it was correct for

Allahabad High Court to drop criminal conspiracy charges against Advani and other leaders in a Babri Masjid demolition case.

Expressing displeasure at the Babri demolition case being dragged on for 25 years, the Supreme Court on Apr 6 hinted at a joint trial of all the accused,  including veteran BJP leader L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, by transferring it to Lucknow.

The apex court indicated that it may order a time-bound  joint trial of all the accused.

The trial for conspiracy in the Babri Masjid demolition case is currently being held in Rae Bareli.

The counsel for Advani and MM Joshi opposed a joint trial, saying the Supreme Court can’t transfer their trial from Rae Bareli.

Apart from Advani and Joshi, Uma Bharti, Kalyan Singh and several other leaders of the party were named in connection with the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case allegedly for instigating a crowd to pull down the structure.

.The other case is against lakhs of volunteers who were in and around the disputed structure at the time of its demolition.
