'Babri Masjid should be rebuilt in Bengal's Murshidabad': TMC MLA Humayun Kabir sparks row
Kolkata/IBNS: Triggering a new controversy, Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir has indicated that he hopes to rebuild Babri Masjid in Beldanga in Bengal's Murshidabad district.
He was the Babri Masjid to be rebuilt on the same date next year on which it was demolished. Babri Masjid was demolished on March 6, 1992.
"I was part of a jalsa-mehfil a few days ago. This was in a Madrassa in Beldanga," he said at a public gathering.
"I was invited and I went and at the gathering there, and giving importance to their feelings, I proposed this. Babri Masjid should be set up at Beldanga. Next year, on December 6, we will make a cast of the Babri Masjid and with donations from everyone we will build a new Babri Masjid in Beldanga in Murshidabad in West Bengal," he added.
Kabir's statement has been met with criticism from the opposition BJP in West Bengal, who claim it's a politically motivated move.
The Trinamool Congress has distanced itself from Kabir's comment, with party supremo Mamata Banerjee not making any public statements on the matter
The MLA, who has a history of making provocative remarks, has courted controversy in the past as well.
The TMC had expelled him from the party in the past. But he rejoined and won from Murshidabad's Bharatpur Assembly constituency.
Earlier this year, Humayun Kabir was in the news for a controversial hate speech, where he said he would "toss the BJP cadres into the Bhagirathi river".
Ahead of the general elections earlier this year, Kabir threatened Hindu voters with dire consequences. The Election Commission had then censured Kabir for his provocative comments.
