New Delhi: Interacting with Sheikh Hasina over a video conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Bangladesh as a major pillar of India's 'Neighborhood First' policy.

"From the very first day, strengthening and development of relations with Bangladesh has been a special priority for me," Modi said.

Speaking on the pandemic situation and the challenges, Modi appreciated the strong bond shared between the two immediate neighbours.

"It is a matter of gratification that India and Bangladesh had good cooperation in this difficult time," he said.

"Whether it be medicines or medical equipment, or working with health professionals. We are also having good cooperation in the field of vaccine. We will also take special care of your needs in this regard," Modi said.

"I thank you for the contribution of Bangladesh under the SAARC framework," he said.

Modi said the relationship between India and Bangladesh is expanding in various spheres.

"We reduced hurdles in land border trade, expanded connectivity between the two countries, and added new means. All this reflects our intentions to further strengthen our relationship," he said.

Speaking on the release of stamps on Bangabandhu, he said, "It is a matter of pride for me that today I am getting an opportunity to release a stamp in honor of Bangabandhu, and inaugurate a digital exhibition on Bapu and Bangabandhu with you. I hope that the exhibition on Bapu and Bangabandhu will inspire our youth, wherein a special section have also been dedicated to Kasturba Gandhi ji and revered Bongmataji."

The two leaders met just a day after Bangladesh observed Vijay Diwas.
"Following the Victory Day, our meeting today is of even more special significance. It is a matter of pride for us to celebrate the historic victory of Bangladesh over Anti-liberation forces as the Victory Day with you," he said.

During the interaction, Sheikh Hasina called India as a 'true friend'.

Recalling the role Indian Army soldiers played in 1971 War which liberated Bangladesh from Pakistan, she said: "“I pay deep homage to the three million martyrs who laid down their lives. I pay tribute to the members of the Indian armed forces martyred in the war and to their families. I pay my gratitude to the government and the people of India who extended their wholehearted support for the cause of our nation.”
