Bengal: AIMIM state president Sk. Abdul Kalam joins Trinamool Congress
Kolkata/IBNS: In a setback for the AIMIM which is set to contest the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections, the party's acting president in the state, Sheikh Abdul Kalam, on Saturday joined the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Kalam joined the Trinamool in presence of West Bengal Minister and Trinamool leader, Chandrima Bhattacharya.
In November 2020, several AIMIM leaders including its then state chief Anwar Pasha had joined the ruling dispensation, led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
After winning five seats in Bihar, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had said his party would contest in the West Bengal polls scheduled to be held in April-May next year.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Trinamool, which has been reigning since 2009, suffered a massive setback while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a huge inroad by winning 18 of 42 seats.
The Trinamool, which had aimed at winning all 42 seats, ended up clinching only 22.
