Bengal Guv inaugurates exhibition to commemorate centenary of Jaliwanwala Bagh massacre at Victoria Memorial Hall

Dhankhar called upon people to use this opportunity to visit the exhibition. This would, in a sense, be a pilgrimage and tribute to those who laid their lives in the freedom struggle, he added.

There will be motivation and inspiration and imbibing spirit of nationalism by the visit, Dhankar said.

Dhankhar also released a folio of representations of water colour paintings of three highly revered Sikh Gurus, Guru Nanak, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Simgh from the Victoria Memorial Hall collection.

Reflecting on the landmark exhibition, the Governor said that the artistic direction of the exhibition has been done in a highly exemplary manner by Sanchayan Ghosh of Kala Bhavana.

The Jalianwala Bagh massacre shamed humanity and has now been even regretted by the Prime Minister of Great Britain in 2019.

One of the most historical protests against the Jalianwala Bagh massacre emanated from the first Nobel Laureate of Asia, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.

His protests by way of letters and actions were widely acclaimed, Dhankar said.

The enormity of the massacre led to return of Knighthood in protest by Rabindranath Tagore and writings to several prominent British citizens.

His articles and poems on the massacre that shamed history will also be on display.

A visit to the exhibition will be highly enlightening as there will be an occasion to focus on audio-visual elements capturing protests that erupted in Bengal against the massacre.

The Governor urged the people that India at the moment is on the rise and " we all owe it to the nation to always keep the nation first and abjure violence both in thought and action".

Apart from Sudesh Dhankhar, wife of the governor, former Indian Hockey captain Gurbux Singh, and several other officials and persons were present.

The Exhibition will be on display at VMH till Sunday, April 19, 2020.
