Bengal tableau not in R-Day parade:Trinamool sore

| | Jan 26, 2015, at 09:52 pm
Kolkata, Jan 26 (IBNS) As US President Barack Obama watched the Republic Day parade along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal on Monday said the Centre refused to allow the state's tableau to feature in the ceremony.

"Bengal tableaux for Republic Day depicting path-breaking Kanya Shree initiative was not allowed. We repeatedly requested..." tweeted Trinamool spokesman and Rajya Sabha member Derek O'Brien.

"We are very sad and disappointed," he told reporters.

The West Bengal tableau was reportedly rejected at the last minute. The tableau showcased the state government's "Kanya Shree" theme on welfare programmes for the girl child, which the Centre reportedly said was similar to that of "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (save your daughters, education your daughters)" llaunched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week.

The defence ministry, which organizes the annual parade, reportedly said  a state tableau should give a broad picture of its culture, economy and history and not focus on just one scheme.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has recently raised an anti-Modi bogey to fight a political battle, reportedly decided against sending a new proposal.
