Bengali refugees will be given citizenship under the Citizenship Bill: Amit Shah says in Malda rally

Malda, Jan 22 (IBNS): Starting the Bharatiya Janata Party's campaign before the Lok Sabah polls by addressing a rally in Malda town, party president Amit Shah on Tuesday urged people to remove Trinamool Congress-led government from the state and promised that all Bengali refugees will be granted citizenship with the passage of the Citizenship Bill.

Shah said: "I will assure all Bengali refugees that they will be given citizenship under the Citizenship Bill. The TMC government has done nothing for the refugees but we will give them citizenship."

Shah also referred to the rally called by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Saturday, which saw several key political leaders sharing the same stage, and said: "Mahagathbandhan is all about greed and lust. They want to remove Modi, while we want to remove poverty and corruption."

He arrived in Malda after his party exchanged barbs with the TMC after the state government denied permission to land his chopper in the town.

"The administration has been politicised. There was no permission for my helicopter and for the rath yatra," Shah said.

Shah referred to the state government's move of not allowing the BJP to conduct a rath yatra in West Bengal recently.  The BJP took the matter to the Supreme Court but did not get any relief in the apex court.

The BJP chief said: "We have to start factories in Bengal and shut down illegal arms and bomb manufacturing units."

Attacking the TMC-led government of the state, Shah said: "Election of 2019 will decide whether the TMC govt who creates hindrances for all the events of BJP will stay or leave."

Shah alleged that more than 60 karyakartas of BJP and other political parties were murdered in Bengal.

The BJP has two Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal and aims to improve the statistics this year in the polls.

Trinamool Congress hits back:

TMC leader Derek O Brien said as quoted by party's Twitter handle: "They don't understand the ethos of India. They don't understand the ethos of Bengal. They are heading towards one big zero. Some are saying they are desperate. Some are saying they have gone mad. Or is it a combination of both ."

Derek said Shah's comments made in the Malda rally reflected the fact that he was 'nervous'.

"After listening to the BJP president's speech in Malda, it is obvious that they are very nervous. They know their days are numbered. They are politically scared. Their speeches are low on facts and poor in taste," he said.
