'Best wishes to Charanjit Singh Channi': Amarinder Singh to Punjab CM-designate

Chandigarh/IBNS: Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh gave his best wishes to Charanjit Singh Channi, whose name was announced for the top job following a meeting of Congress MLAs this evening.

"My best wishes to Charanjit Singh Channi. I hope he's able to keep the border state of Punjab safe and protect our people from the growing security threat from across the border," Singh said in a message.

Singh's message was posted on Twitter by Raveen Thukral, his media advisor.

"Sad at not being able to personally hand over job letters to kin of 150 farmers who had lost their lives in stir against #FarmLaws. Hope CM-designate Charanjit S Channi will do needful at earliest. I continue to stand with farmers in fight for justice," he further said in another message tweeted by Thukral.

Channi, 58, who is the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab, is at present the state Technical Education Minister and a three-time MLA from Chamkaur Sahib constituency.

The decision to appoint Channi as the new CM came after a meeting with Punjab Congress MLAs.

Singh, 79, resigned as the chief minister of the state on Saturday.

His resignation came after months of a bitter verbal spat with Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was appointed the Punjab Congress chief in July in place of Sunil Jakhar.

After submitting his resignation, Singh had said he felt humiliated, apparently from lack of support from Congress leadership despite continuous attacks from Sidhu and his veteran status in the party.

"I was humiliated three times... they do not have confidence in me... now up to them to appoint anyone they trust," he had said.
