Bhima-Koregaon case: SC rejects Romila Thapar's review plea seeking release of activists
New Delhi, Oct 27 (IBNS): The Supreme Court has rejected historian Romila Thapar's review plea seeking the release of five activists who were held in August in connection with the violence which broke out in Koregaon-Bhima in Maharashtra early this year, media reports said.
Later following the Supreme Court's directive, five activists- Varavara Rao, lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj, activists Arun Ferreira, Gautam Navlakha and Vernon Gonsalves- were put under house arrest on Aug 29.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justices A M Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud dismissed the plea on Friday.
On Sept 28, the top court had extended the house arrest of five activists by four weeks.
Meanwhile, Ferreira and Gonsalves were remanded to police custody by a special court till Nov 6.
The activists were initially arrested by Pune Police in multi-city raids on Aug 28 in connection with the Dalit-upper caste violence in Bhima Koregaon.
The activists were freed from judicial custody following the top court's order on Aug 29.
On the same day, the Supreme Court had observed, "dissent is the safety valve of democracy. If dissent is not allowed then the pressure cooker may burst."
