Bhubaneswar tops list of 20 smart cities

New Delhi, Jan 28 (IBNS): Bhubaneswar topped the list of the first 20 cities to win the 'smart city' tag as announced by Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday.

Twenty Indian towns and cities were selected from the 97 towns and cities that had been chosen for the Smart City project in August after a competition between states.

The cities that have made it to the top 20 are  Bhuvaneswar, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Solapur, Dhavangiri, Indore, the New Delhi area, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belgaum, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai, Ludhiana and Bhopal.

All the states were asked to submit names, of cities that were judged on their service levels, infrastructure and track record.

"This announcement marks a paradigm shift in our approach to urban development in the country," Naidu said.

"I am delighted to announce the names of first batch of 20 winners of the competitions," he said.
