BJP accuses Congress of violating MCC in Rajya Sabha polls

| @indiablooms | Feb 27, 2024, at 02:16 pm

BJP candidate for Rajya Sabha from Himachal Harsh Mahajan accused the National Congress Legislative Party of violating the Model Code of Conduct by issuing whips to Congress party MLAs.

In a complaint addressed to the Election Commission of India, Mahajan said that the three-line whip given to all members of the legislative assembly allegedly directing them to remain present on Tuesday for election to RS. '

"All the Members of the INCLP are requested to vote in favour of the party's official candidate Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi and put the vote in the ballot box after showing the vote to the agent authorised by the party," the whip read. Tthe BJP said that whip issued on Feb 22 is in vIolation of MCC.

The complaint addressed to ECI that gross violations of MCC were done by the issuing of the whip during the election of RS in Himachal Pradesh. Candidates pointed out that ECI has also issued clarification on July 6 2017 that political parties could not issue any whip like they do in legislative assembly asking their MLAs to vote for a particular candidate.

The party also sought action in view of the gravity of the complaint.

Mahajan also demanded show cause notice be slapped on INCLP.

He alleged that the whip would affect the decision-making ability of the MLAs and the violation amounts to undue influence on them.

The BJP candidate alleged that it was at the behest of the Congress RS candidate that such a whip was issued.
