The Bharatiya Janata Party returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh for second consecutive term by winning 46 seats while the ruling Sikkim Karantikari Morcha (SKM) retained its position by registering a thumping victory in the Himalayan state as counting of votes for the Assembly polls was held on Sunday, just two days before the results of the Lok Sabha polls will be declared.

In Arunachal Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party won 46 out of the 60 Assembly seats while the National People's Party (NPP) bagged five.

The Congress won one seat while the remaining went to others.

Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Sunday called on Governor Lt. General KT Parnaik (Retd.) at Raj Bhavan, Itanagar and tendered his resignation along with the Council of Ministers.

The Governor has accepted the resignation and requested Pema Khandu and the Council of Ministers to continue until the new Government is sworn in.

Under Article 174 (2) (b) of the Constitution of India, the Governor has also accepted the Cabinet's advice and signed the order to dissolve the Seventh State Assembly with immediate effect.

The Governor expressed his appreciation to the Chief Minister for successfully managing the State Administration during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh.

Besides the Lok Sabha polls, voting in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim to elect new assemblies were held on April 19.

Congratulating his political outfit, Indian PM Narendra Modi, who is eyeing a record return for the third term, posted on X: "Thank you Arunachal Pradesh! The people of this wonderful state have given an unequivocal mandate to politics of development. My gratitude to them for reposing their faith in @BJP4Arunachal yet again. Our Party will keep working with even greater vigour for the state’s growth."

After managing a narrow victory in 2019,  Sikkim Karantikari Morcha (SKM) returned to power with a landslide triumph in the assembly polls by bagging 31 seats.

The only other seat in the assembly was won by the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front.

The SDF witnessed a massive crash in its tally since it had clinched 15 in the 2019 polls.

Congratulating the CM, Indian PM Narendra Modi posted on X: "Congratulations to SKM and CM @PSTamangGolay for their victory in the Sikkim Assembly Elections 2024. I look forward to working with the State Government to further the progress of Sikkim in the coming times."

Following his X post, CM Prem Singh Tamang said: "Thank you for your kind words and support, Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji. We are committed to continuing our efforts towards the development and prosperity of Sikkim. We look forward to collaborating with you to achieve our shared goals for the betterment of our state. Your unwavering support has been a driving force for us, and we look forward to your continued guidance and blessings."
