BJP’s popularity is shrinking and it will be defeated in Delhi too : Tarun Gogoi

Guwahati: Hitting out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), former Assam Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Tarun Gogoi said the ruling party's popularity is now shrinking it will be defeated in Delhi too.

Gogoi said huge mass gathering in any meeting or rally does not mean the public has supported that party.

“The BJP has able to gather huge public in their election rallies in Delhi, but the party will be defeated again. People will not vote on speech, people will vote on work. Huge mass gathered in their meetings, but their popularity is now shrinking. The results of Delhi assembly election will prove it. They (BJP) lost in Jharkhand, Haryana, Maharashtra also. They are losing people’s credibility. They are only trying to show their popularity by gathering huge public,” Tarun Gogoi said.

Reacting over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting to celebrate the Bodo peace accord held in Kokrajhar, the former Assam Chief Minister said PM Modi did only a drama.

“The people of Assam are not fool, we also know that, how much your sympathy is for Assam. It is not sympathy, it is only crocodile tears. Yesterday, PM Modi was trying to give an impression that peace has come to the Bodoland after signing the accord. But everybody know that, peace environment came to the Bodoland when we had signed an accord with the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) in 2003 and development started there from that time. The recent accord is signed with the fringe groups only,” Gogoi said.

He also termed the recent Bodo peace accord as a cosmetic accord and said the major accord was signed in 2003.

“We also want peace and the region, its culture, language to be developed. But the non-Bodo people of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area have been deprived from this accord and their grievances are also being ignored while the non-Bodo people are majority in the area,” Tarun Gogoi said.

The senior Congress leader also said the unrest situation is going on in Assam only because of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the Prime Minister and Union Home minister are responsible for it.

“People from every section of the society have now come on the street against the act. This act will destroy our language, culture, identity and it is also violating the Assam Accord. They said that, we are spreading misinformation, but actually you are spreading misinformation. They are saying about Clause 6, but don’t mention the main Clause 5 of Assam Accord,” Gogoi said.

He also said that PM Modi does not give any importance to the people of Assam what they want.
