CAA protest in Bangalore: Historian Ramchandra Guha detained

Guha was among several other protesters who were detained by the police while they were demonstrating in the city against the law.

"I have been detained by police for holding a poster of Gandhi and speaking about the constitution to the press," Ramchandra Guha told NDTV.

"The police are working under directions from central government. We are protesting non-violently against a discriminatory act, in a disciplined way. Look here, everyone is protesting peacefully. Have you seen any violence?," he said.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC was clamped in Karnataka as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order as various political parties and organisation planned to stage dharna, demonstration and protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The Order clamped with immediate effect will be in force till Dec 21 midnight from 0600 hrs on Thursday, City Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao announced at a press conference convened last night.

Rao said that under the order permission will not be given to any organisation, political parties to hold demonstration or any sort of agitation against CAA passed in the Parliament recently.

The order prohibits holding demonstration, assembly of more than five people, carrying lethal weapons,arms etc., and indulge in activities that disturb peace in the society.

Meanwhile, the police tweeted: " Some people are spreading rumors. We request citizens not to give attention to them. #144 CRPC ."
