Calcutta HC dismisses all civic police appointments in WB
Kolkata, May 20 (IBNS): The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered the West Bengal government to cancel all appointments of civic volunteers in the state by Dec 31, 2016.
While passing judgment on a writ petition filed by several unsuccessful candidates of civic police recruitment interview, Calcutta High Court's Justice Sanjib Banerjee observed that the appointments were illicit and there was lack of transparency in the recruitment process.
He directed to cancel all civic volunteers, who were recruited by Sarenga and Barikul Police Stations in Bankura district in 2013, in next 24 hours after clearing their all due payments. Justice Banerjee also ordered the state not to renew the job of as many as one lakh twenty thousand civic police personnel, who were recruited in 2013, after Dec 31, 2016.
The court stated that if government wanted to continue civic volunteer's post, all volunteers have to be recruited by a fresh examination, which will have 80% objective and 20% subjective questions.
Besides the direction, the court has formed a three-men-committee, comprising of state's Transport Secretary, Finance department's principal secretary and the commissioner of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, to make a permanent guideline for civic volunteer recruitment examination.
The committee will submit its proposal before the Chief Secretary in next three months.
