Calcutta High Court orders to form high-power committee to ban unauthorized Toto
Kolkata, May 6 (IBNS): The Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, Manjulla Chellur on Friday directed the West Bengal government to form a high-power committee to take steps against unauthorized e-rickshaws, which are locally known as Toto, and to ban those as well.
According to the directive, the committee will comprise of Chief Secretary and Home Secretary of the West Bengal government, Director General of WB Police (DGP), four Police Commissioners of Kolkata, Barrackpore, Howrah and Bidhannagar, and other senior government officials.
While hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), filed to take steps against unauthorized Toto, the court directed WB Transport Secretary Alapon Banerjee, who was present there during the hearing, that the committee has to hold its first meeting, to discuss the steps against illegal e-rickshaws, in next 15 days.
Assuring the court that a committee will be formed as soon as possible, the Transport Secretary said that illegal e-rickshaws could not be banned for several socio-economic reasons.
The proposed committee has to submit its report, describing the steps to ban unauthorized e-rickshaws (Toto), before the court by June 10.
