Cargo ship carrying 15 Indians hijacked off Somalia coast, Indian Navy keeps close watch

New Delhi/IBNS: A cargo ship carrying 15 Indians has been hijacked near the Somalia coast late last evening, media reports said.

The Indian Navy has rushed a warship towards it, NDTV reported.

Communication has been established with the crew.

The information of the hijack first reached on Thursday evening, military officials said as reported by NDTV.

The Indian Navy issued a statement which reads, "The vessel had sent a message on the UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations) portal, indicating boarding by approximately five to six unknown armed personnel on the evening of January 4, 2024."

It added, "Naval aircraft continues to monitor movement and INS Chennai is closing the vessel to render assistance. The overall situation is being closely monitored, in coordination with other agencies/ MNF in the area."
