Chhattisgarh: Gas pipeline blast in Bhilai Steel Plant leaves nine killed

Bhilai, Oct 9 (IBNS): A blast at state-run Steel Authority of India Limited’s Bhilai plant in Durg district of Chhattisgarh left at least nine people killed, officials said on Tuesday.

The incident left 14 others injured.

"All of them are said to be serious and are admitted to the district hospital. The figures (of the dead) could rise in the next couple of hours,” Durg’s inspector general of police GP Singh said while speaking to the Hindustan Times.

The injured people were rushed to hospital after the blast.

The incident occurred at 10:30 am after a fire broke out in the gas pipeline of  Coke Oven Battery Complex No 11.

"In an unfortunate incident at around 10.30 am, today in SAIL Bhilai Steel Plant, there was a fire in gas pipe line of Coke Oven Battery Complex No 11 during a scheduled maintenance job. Some persons working at the site sustained burn injury," read the statement issued by SAIL.

"Injured persons were immediately rushed to the BSP hospital for medical care and aid. Meanwhile, the fire has been controlled. So far, 9 persons have lost their lives and 14 are undergoing medical treatment. All resources have been mobilized to provide adequate care to the injured," the company said.
