Congress begins candidate selection for poll-bound states; Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to head Assam panel

| @indiablooms | Jan 04, 2026, at 01:10 pm

The Congress on Saturday initiated the process of selecting candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, announcing the formation of Screening Committees for poll-bound states.

In a first, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been appointed to head the party’s Screening Committee for Assam, marking her debut in overseeing candidate selection for the state.

The move signals the party’s intent to strengthen its organisational focus in Assam ahead of the elections.

The Screening Committees will be responsible for shortlisting and recommending candidates after consultations with state leaders and party workers.

Senior Congress leaders have been assigned to lead similar panels in other states going to the polls.

The development comes as the Congress accelerates preparations to finalise its electoral strategy and streamline decision-making in key battleground states.
