Congress MLAs scuffle with Marshal in WB assembly after opposition leader's suspension from house

Kolkata, Feb 8 (IBNS): MLAs of West Bengal's main opposition Congress reportedly scuffled with the Marshal and other security personnel of state assembly (Vidan Sabha) in Kolkata during an agitation over the suspension of opposition party leader Abdul Mannan on Wednesday.

According to reports, the government had called for a session in the assembly to pass a bill against vandalism of state-public property during demonstration.

MLAs of the opposition parties joined the house, wearing jackets with pictures of Mamata Banerjee's assembly attack in 2006, to protest the bill.

Meanwhile, speaker of the Bengal assembly, Biman Banerjee, suspended senior Congress leader Abdul Mannan for wearing such jackets and directed him to leave the house.

As the opposition party leader denied to go out of the house, assembly's Marshal and other security personnel forcibly took him out from the assembly house.

During the scuffle, Abdul Mannan complained of illness and he was rushed to a private hospital nearby.

Following the incident, Congress MLAs engaged in a tussle with the Marshal and others and allegedly vandalized house properties.

The Marshal of West Bengal assembly claimed that he and at least 10 others were injured during the scuffle.

Meanwhile, all MLAs of the opposition parties walked out from the house to protest the incident and the state government passed the bill in an opposition-free session.

"It's a black day in the history of Bengal assembly and the entire incident was a conspiracy of ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC)," CPI-M MLA Sujan Chakraborty told IBNS.

"A senior leader like Adbul Mannan was forcibly thrown out from the assembly house and when he became ill, nobody helped us to take him to the hospital," Chakraborty said.

However, oppositions have called for separate rallies on Thursday in Kolkata to protest the incident.

Meanwhile, condemning of the incident, state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "This incident is shameful for democracy. CPI-M, BJP and Congress all are same."

However, till the last update came in, Abdul Mannan is undergoing treatment in a stable condition in a hospital in central Kolkata.
