Kolkata/Cooch Behar, Nov 11 (IBNS): The Cooch Behar district police have arrested twenty-one suspects so far in connection with the killing of a policeman on Tuesday, reports said.

On Tuesday night, when few policemen from Kotwali Police Station conducted raid in a gamble-camp at Four Number Bazar area in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, gamblers reportedly attacked the policemen.

Few policemen were injured in the attack and rushed to MJN Hospital nearby where one Sub-Inspector (SI) of Kotwali Police Station, Ranjit Pal (50) was declared dead.

Meanwhile, the superintended of police of Cooch Behar district said that the policeman had died of heart attack.

When policemen were moving towards a camp, few people started stone pelting, aiming at them. One police constable was hit by stone and the windshields of a police vehicle were also smashed by stones hit by them.  Ranjit Pal suddenly fell on the ground. Injured policemen were rushed to MJN Hospital quickly and there Ranjit Pal was declared dead. No external injury mark was found on his body. I met the doctor. He said that Ranjit Pal had died of cardiac arrest,"  Cooch Behar SP Rajesh Yadav told IBNS.

"We have started investigation into the case and arrested 21 persons so far. Our search operation to arrest other accused is currently underway," Yadav further said.

According to police reports, the arrested have been charged under four non-bailable IPC sections including 302 (Murder).

Meanwhile, the family of the killed policeman denied the statement of Cooch Behar SP.

"We found an injury mark on his chest. He was beaten and killed. We are demanding for a proper investigation into this case," Ranjit Pal's wife Ratna Pal told the media.

However, after completing his post mortem, Ranjit Pal's body was handed over to his family on Wednesday.
