New Delhi/IBNS: A couple from Kashmir with alleged links to the Khorasan module of  Islamic State (IS) caught from southeast Delhi's Jamia Nagar on Sunday had far more dangerous designs than instigating CAA protests. The duo was planning a suicide attack in Delhi and was instigating Muslim men to conduct terror strikes in the national capital, said an NDTV report.

The couple, identified as Jahanjeb Sami and Hina Bashir Beg, was caught on Sunday in an early morning operation following the inputs of the Intelligence Bureau, Deputy Delhi Commissioner of Police(DCP) Pramod Singh Kushwaha said, according to another report by the Indian Express.

The NDTV report said sources have told it that IS has a major role in engineering the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens(NRC).

Several incriminating items were found from their possession.

After Shaheen Bagh, Jamia Nagar has been the major hub of protest against the amended citizenship law.

Jahanjeb Sami worked in a private company and he along with his wife ran a social media platform "Indian Muslims unite" through which they mobilised people against CAA and NRC.

The Centre has been repeatedly asserting that the CAA protests were a conspiracy. BJP leaders like Giriraj Singh have alleged Pakistan's involvement in the widespread CAA and NRC protest which turned violent in many places.

Post the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act, several parts of the national capital, mainly Seelampur, Jamia Nagar, Matia Mahal, Mustafabad, Shaheen Bagh witnessed violent protests.

Jamia and neighbouring Shaheen Bagh in Delhi's Okhla area have been facing protests against the newly amended Citizenship Act which provides Indian citizenship to religious minorities of Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan living in India as refugees after escaping religious persecution in their countries of origin. Such refugees who entered India by Dec 31, 2014 only will be considered for citizenship.

The protest scene in Delhi flared up after alleged police attacks on the students of Jamia Milia University on the night of December 15, 2019.

The agitations were followed by riots in northeast Delhi between Hindus and Muslims claiming 53 lives. The riots occurred when US President Donald Trump was visiting India with his family.
