Crime is crime irrespective of any religion: Mamata on mob attack on cops in Tikiapara

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is often accused of appeasing the Muslim community by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Wednesday talked tough against an incident in Howrah's Tikiapara where a mob of a particular community attacked cops a day ago.

Reacting to the incident hours after 10 people were arrested in connection with the incident, Banerjee said a "crime is crime" for all people irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

"A bad incident has occurred in Tikiapara. It should not have happened. I have asked police to take stern action against the guilty without harassing the innocents. Of course wrong is universal for all human beings. This is West Bengal. We love all people irrespective of caste, creed and religion but crime is crime," she said at state headquarters Nabanna.

Howrah City Police have arrested 10 people so far in connection with the attack on policemen on Covid-19 duty in Howrah's containment zone Tikiapara area earlier on Tuesday, while further raids are on at the location, officials said on Wednesday afternoon.

"We have arrested 10 people so far in connection with the case and our further probe as well as raids are on to identify and nab all perpetrators involved in the attack on police," a senior official told IBNS.

"Our personnel along with Rapid Action Force (RAF) are currently patrolling at the area," the official added.

On Tuesday evening, lockdown violators at a large number chased and attacked policemen at containment zone Belilious Road area near Tikiapara police outpost, when cops went there to disperse the mob who had reportedly gathered at the region, defying lockdown restrictions, social distancing norms and other precautionary measures.

At least two cops were injured in the attack while a police jeep was vandalized by the mob.

Following the incident, Bengal BJP attacked Banerjee by putting up a tweet which reads, "West Bengal Police personnel attacked by stone-pelting mob for trying to enforce lockdown in Tikiapara, Howrah. Thanks to Mamata Banerjee’ appeasement politics, her loyal voters are now attacking policemen, even while Bengal faces a tough fight against #Covid19 pandemic."

Hitting back at the saffron outfit, the CM said, "Why they (BJP) are so spirited after the incident? Why are they defaming Bengal?"
