Cyclone Roanu to touch Bengal's coastal areas tonight
Kolkata, May 20 (IBNS): The Kolkata regional centre of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday confirmed that cyclonic storm Roanu, which has been created due to a depression on the Bay of Bengal, is moving at a speed of 40 km/hour towards the coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh.
The IMD also said that Roanu could touch the coastal areas of WB by Friday midnight with an extremely heavy rainfall and would enter into Bangladesh between Saturday afternoon and night.
Deputy Director General of Indian Meteorological Department-IMD ( Eastern zone), Gokul Chandra Debnath told IBNS, "Cyclone Roanu is moving towards the coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh at a speed of 40 kilometres per hour. Roanu is still moving as a cyclonic storm and it would not transform itself into a super cyclone. Crossing Odisha coast, Roanu will reach the coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh by tonight midnight to tomorrow morning."
"The powerful cyclone will enter into Bangladesh's terrain through Khepupara and Cox's Bazar coasts by tomorrow afternoon to night. As the cyclone will pass by the coastal areas off Bengal, it would trigger a heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and a storm with a wind speed of 70-80 km/hr in these areas. We have asked to raise local warning signal number 4. All fishermen have been warned not to go to sea for fishing," Debnath further added.
The West Bengal government has warned the local authorities of its three coastal districts, including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore. The Disaster Management Group (DMG) and rescue teams have been made ready for immediate intervention.
A 24x7 control room has been opened in state's main administrative building Nabanna. Numbers of the control room are: 1070 and (033) 2214-3526.
