Dalbir Singh Suhag to be next Army Chief

New Delhi, May 13 (IBNS):Vice Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag will become the next army chief of the country.

"Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh is all set to become the next army chief after the defence ministry on Monday sent his name to the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) for approval," Hindustan Times reported.

He will succeed Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday allowed the UPA government to initiate the process of appointing the next Army chief.

The EC in a communication sent to the Defence Ministry stated that the model code of conduct does not extend to matters relating to the armed forces, reports said.

The present government had earlier proposed the name of Vice Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag for the top post.

But the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had opposed to Lieutenant General Suhag's appointment saying the new government should choose the next chief.

Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh will retire on July 31 and as per the tradition, the successor is appointed two months ahead of that.
