Days after MHA declares Tripura COVID-19 free, two BSF Jawans test positive

Agartala/UNI: A week after Tripura was declared Covid-19 free by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), two fresh cases of the deadly viral disease were detected on Saturday, leaving the state administration confused about the spread of the disease in the state.

Interestingly, the state is completely disconnected for the past 40 days due to lockdown. The integrated disease surveillance team has not been able to trace the source of the fresh infections.

According to reports, both the affected persons belong to 138 battalion of BSF stationed at Jawaharnagar of Ambassa in Dhalai district.Though one of them has a travel history, the second person has not traveled anywhere or stayed with any coronavirus infected person.

One of the jawans hails from Dibrugarh in Assam. Sources said, the 49-year-old jawan had travelled by train from Dibrugarh on March 10 this year.

He had been alright afterwards. But, three days ago, he was admitted to  district hospital in Dhalai with breathing difficulties,  upset stomach, and fever.

On Friday, he was shifted to the flu clinic at  Agartala Govt Medical College (AGMC) and his first test was negative.

As he showed symptoms typical of COVID-19, doctors conducted repeat tests on Saturday and he was found coronavirus positive.

His 29-year-old colleague, who is a resident of a neighbourhood in the outskirts of Agartala, was accompanying him at AGMC and was asymptomatic. As per protocol, the doctors tested his swabs and he was found Covid-19 positive.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb informed about the cases in a tweet on Saturday: “In Tripura two persons from Ambassa #BSF unit found Covid-19 positive. Total #Covid-19 positive cases in Tripura stands at 4. (Two already discharged, so active hospital cases: 2). Updated at 02:30 pm/ 2nd May.”

Earlier, six districts of Tripura, including Dhalai was announced green zone by Ministry of Home Affairs and the administration was prepared to start activities in those areas from Monday but with the two BSF jawans testing COVID-19 positive, there has been an abrupt disruption in the planning.

The health officials, however, stated that contact tracing of the jawans has begun and already 35 people including the hospital staff in Ambassa have been sent to quarantine and more people are being added to the list.

The administration is toiling hard to find the source of infection of the jawans.

On April 6, a 45-year-old housewife from Gomati district tested Covid-19 positive for the first time in Tripura. The woman had travelled by Delhi-Agartala Tripurasundari Express on March 18.

After four days, a 32-year-old Tripura State Rifles(TSR) jawan was found positive for the deadly contagion. He was claimed to be a source of infection. The Jawan had boarded at Meerut and traveled with the woman in the same compartment.
