Debasree Chaudhuri's emphatic victory from WB's Raigunj earns her ministerial berth

Kolkata, May 30 (UNI/IBNS): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state general secretary Debasree Chaudhuri, who won the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, has secured a ministerial berth in the Narendra Modi government on Thursday.

She took oath at the Rashtrapati Bhawan along with Asansol's two-time MP Babul Supriyo.

Chaudhuri defeated Trinamool Congress' (TMC) candidate Kanaialal Agarwal by a margin of 60,574 votes.

CPI (M) heavyweight candidate Mohammed Salim and Congress candidate Deepa Dasmunsi were placed third and fourth respectively in this election in Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur district which has a Muslim population of nearly 49 per cent.

After winning the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat, Chaudhury said, “Upcoming assembly elections will be one-sided because TMC will not exist. Their MLAs & Councillors are joining BJP. TMC will not be able to do anything in next election. BJP will form the govt there. We will finish them in 5-6 months.”

In the 2014 general election, the CPI(M) candidate Mohammed Salim got 3,17,515 votes and the Congress candidate Deepa Dasmunsi secured 3,15,881 votes. The BJP and the TMC came third and fourth bagging 2,03,131 and 1,92,698 votes respectively.

The saffron party has made significant inroads in the district following the killing of two youth activists in police firing in the district's Darivit High School last year while holding an agitation to demand the recruitment of teachers in literature and science subjects and protesting against the appointment of Urdu teachers.

Earlier, State BJP President Dilip Ghosh also held a public meeting in Darivit and said the rally was a homage to the "martyred" students.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the name of the two deceased youth and attacked the Mamata Banerjee government on this issue during his April 3 rally in Siliguri.

Party candidate Debasree Chaudhury, who launched her campaign from Darivit, said the incident was yet another instance of the appeasement politics of the Trinamool Congress government.

"The BJP has shown solidarity with the movement but the sitting MP or former MP did not stand by the villagers,” Chaudhury said.

"The health infrastructure, rail and road connectivity in the region is languishing. The work of expanding NH-34 has been stalled due to Trinamool's syndicate raj,” she added.
