Thiruvananthapuram/UNI: Five members of a debt-ridden family have been found dead in Kerala's Kallambalam town here.

It is alleged that the five committed suicide due to acute financial crisis. Their extreme measures apparently followed action against their roadside shop by Panchayat Health Department officials. The incident came to light late Friday.

The deceased were identified as shop owner Manikandan, his wife Sandhya, their children Ameya and Ajeesh, and his mother's sister Devaki.

While Manikandan was found hanging in his room, the others allegedly consumed poison, sources said Saturday

Manikandan could not open his shop for the last few days due to various issues including objections from the panchayat officials, sources added.

Investigations are underway.
