Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announces waiver on arrears on water bills

Delhi: In another sop for the Delhi residents ahead of the Assembly polls, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday announced a one-time waiver on arrears on water bills.

As a result of the step, now people of Delhi will not have to pay the late payment fees and will also get a waiver on the principal amount of the bill.

Announcing the waiver, Kejriwal, who heads the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), said, "Today's water bills waiver announcement is a major reform in the water sector. Not only will it recover ₹600 crores of revenue, it will also incentivise households to install water meters."

"In the past 5 years we have resolved the root of the compounding arrears by fixing DJB's faulty billing process. This is a fresh start for honest consumers who want to pay their bills but were unable to so far due to irregular cycles and often incorrect arrears" he added.

Earlier, the AAP government had announced free rides for Delhi women in metro and state-run buses and free electricity upto 200 units for all people staying in the national capital.

Though the AAP had a landslide victory in the last assembly elections, Kejriwal's party has failed to win even a single seat in Delhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

All the seven Lok Sabha seats were won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had won only three seats in the last state polls.

The AAP had won 67 out of 70 assembly seats in 2015.
