Despite rising COVID-19 cases, Kerala, Maharashtra rule out statewide lockdown

Thiruvananthapuram/Mumbai/IBNS: Kerala and Maharashtra, the two states reporting highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country, have ruled out the imposition of a statewide lockdown, media reports said.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has cited the economy and livelihoods as the reason behind non-imposition of a lockdown.

"No one supports measures like statewide lockdown. This will create a huge crisis for the economy and livelihoods. Expert opinion is that we need to build social immunity and move back to normal. Caution should not be compromised at all," Vijayan said as reported by ABP Live.

Kerala has been reporting over 30,000 daily infections though the overall coronavirus situation seems to be under control in the vast country of 1.3 billion.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Friday stayed the state government's decision to hold class 11 examinations physically for a week.

The COVID-19 situation in Kerala is alarming, stated the top court.

Ruling out any lockdown, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope appealed to people to celebrate Ganesh festival avoiding crowding.

The western state of the country has been reporting over 4,000 daily infections.
