Dimapur lynching: 18 held, curfew lifted till 3 PM
Dimapur, Mar 8 (IBNS): Twelve more people have been arrested on Sunday in Nagaland's commercial town of Dimapur in connection with the lynching of a rape accused, taking the total number of people held in the case to 18.
While the situation continues to remain tensed in Dimapur, six people were earlier arrested for lynching the rape accused.
According to reports, mobile, Internet and SMS services have been blocked for the next 48 hours in Dimapur to prevent provocation and spread of rumours.
However, the curfew has been relaxed in the town till 3 PM.
The administration has reportedly deployed 11 companies of India Reserve Battalion and three companies of Central Reserved Police Force to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, the Nagaland government has suspended Dimapur district Superintendent of Police Meren Jamir, Deputy Commissioner Wezope Kenye and Dimapur Central Jail Senior Superintendent B Chuba Phum with immediate effect.
Earlier, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday reviewed the situation in Dimapur with Chief Minister of Nagaland T.R. Zeliang and asked him to ensure law and order in the town, officials said.
"The Union Home Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh has reviewed the situation in Dimapur with the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Shri T.R. Zeliang telephonically, today," read a government statement.
Singh had asked Zeliang to take strict action against the culprits.
He had also assured necessary assistance from the Centre.
Prohibitory orders continued in Nagaland's commercial town of Dimapur.
Admitting to administrative lapses, Chief Minister TR Zeliang had said relaxing Section 144 in the area was a mistake.
On Friday, several thousand people broke open two gates of the central jail, dragged the accused out of the prison and paraded him naked before lynching him.
It was alleged that Syed Farid Khan, the 35-year-old second hand car dealer, had raped a 25-year-old local woman several times.
