EC bars NaMo TV from airing political contents without verification
New Delhi, Apr 11 (IBNS): The Election Commission on Thursday barred NaMo TV, a platform dedicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speeches 24*7, from airing any political content without certification.
In a letter to the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer, the Election Commission said any political publicity material aired on electronic media without certification should be banned owing to the Model Code of Conduct.
"As NaMo TV/Content TV is sponsored by a political party, all recorded programmes of political contents displayed on the channel/platform would be covered under the purview of the Commission's Order..." the Election Commission's letter reads.
"Any political publicity materials/contents, being displayed on electronic media without the requisite certification from competent authority (MCMC in this case) should be removed immediately and any political content shall only be permitted strictly in accordance with the ECI instructions in this regard," the letter adds.
However, the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer told ECI that the logo featuring PM Modi was approved.
Although the officer said that it did not "certify" the content as it contained the old speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The opposition parties had earlier protested against the TV channel after it had appeared on satellite networks last month, media reports said.
In a major development, the Election Commission of India on Wednesday banned display of biopics on political leaders that could alter the level-playing field during the elections, a move that prevented makers of biopic on PM Narendra Modi from releasing the movie on Thursday.
The first phase of voting in the Lok Sabha polls was held on Thursday.
Amid complaints against movies like NTR Laxmi and PM Narendra Modi, the Election Commission had said they “have potential to affect level playing field”.
Affirming that it could not decide on the basis of a two-minute trailer whether the biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi would influence voters, the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a petition filed by Indian National Congress spokesperson, Aman Panwar, seeking a stay on the release of the movie, slated for April 11, Thursday.
