EC issues notice to BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj for his alleged remarks against the minorities

New Delhi, Jan 10 (IBNS): The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday has issued notice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sakhshi Maharaj for his remarks against minorities, according to media reports.

Sakshi Maharaj has to reply to the notice by Wednesday forenoon.

The Congress Party had lodged a complain against the BJP MP after his alleged public speech at a gathering in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, last week, amounted to supporting enmity on religious grounds, media reported.

The Model Code of Conduct has been implemented in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh. Coupled with the recent Supreme Court judgement that invoking religion, caste, etc for influencing voters is a corrupt practice under the Representation of People Act, the MP's alleged speech has been under the EC radar.

The EC, which also mentioned that a police case had been registered against him, said the complaint filed on January 7 alleges that his Meerut speech, read in entirety, had the effect of promoting enmity between different classes in connection with the election on grounds of religion, reported The Hindu.
