Election Commission removes Vivek Sahay as Bengal DGP a day after appointment

New Delhi/IBNS: The Election Commission Tuesday removed Vivek Sahay as West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) a day after announcing his appointment for the post.

The Commission directed the state government to appoint Sanjoy Mukherjee, who is a year junior to Sahay in the IPS cadre, to fill the position.

The move rendered Sahay the shortest-serving DGP of Bengal.

Sahay, an IPS officer of the 1988 batch, was initially offered the appointment since he was the senior-most officer in the force.

However, due to his scheduled superannuation on May 31, well ahead of the formal conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections on June 4, the poll panel considered naming Mukherjee.

Days after announcing the schedule for Lok Sabha polls, the Commission on Monday issued orders for the removal of home secretaries in six states- Gujarat, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The poll body had ordered Bengal's then DGP Rajeev Kumar to stay away from election work and asked the state government to send a panel of names of three police officers for appointment in his place.

While Sahay's appointment was announced by the state home department in which it referred to the ECI order, the corresponding notification for Mukherjee a day later was made directly by the Commission.
