Expelled TMC MP Mahua Moitra vacates her government bungalow

New Delhi/IBNS: Expelled Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Friday vacated her government bungalow in the national capital Delhi following a fresh eviction notice served to the firebrand politician.

Moitra, who was expelled from Parliament's lower house Lok Sabha due to unethical conduct, vacated the bungalow of address 9B Telegraph Lane at 10 am.

The Directorate of Estates (DoE) had sent an eviction notice to Moitra after she lost her parliamentary membership over "cash-for-query" allegations.

On January 4, the Delhi High Court had asked Moitra to approach DoE if she wants to continue staying in the bungalow.

Moitra, who was the MP from West Bengal's Krishnanagar constituency, pleaded in the court to set aside the December 11 order of Directorate of Estates or allow her to continue occupying the government bungalow till the declaration of the results of 2024 General Elections.

The DoE had sent three eviction notices to the TMC leader on January 12 and 17.

Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha on Friday over a report by the Ethics Committee on the 'cash for query' charges against her.

The TMC leader is accused of taking bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for asking questions that are critical of the Narendra Modi-led government in the Centre.

The  Krishnanagar MP was even accused of surrendering log-in credentials to a confidential account on the parliamentary website which would enable  Hiranandani to post questions directly.

She denied the bribery charges but admitted sharing login details.

Though Moitra had challenged the expulsion in the Supreme Court, the top court said it will first examine whether it has the jurisdiction to hear the case.

The next hearing will take place on March 11.
