External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar meets newly-elected Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa

New Delhi/IBNS: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday reached Sri Lanka to meet newly-elected President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Taking to his twitter handle, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar tweeted: "A warm meeting with Sri Lanka President @GotabayaR Conveyed PM  @narendramodi ’s message of a partnership for shared peace, progress, prosperity & security. Confident that under his leadership, #IndiaSriLanka relations would reach greater heights."

Jaishankar's unscheduled and short visit to Rajapaksa was the first one by any foreign dignitary.

The quick meet is being viewed as India's attempt to build early ties with a dispensation which India is cautious of given the fact that Gotabaya and his brother former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had been closer to China.

During the meeting, the External Affairs Minister also forwarded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invite to Sri Lankan President, which he accepted.

President @GotabayaR has accepted PM @narendramodi ’s invitation to visit India on 29th November.
