Farmer suicides: Telangana govt hikes compensation to Rs. 6 Lakh

| | Sep 20, 2015, at 04:37 pm
Hyderabad, Sept 20 (IBNS): With an increasing number of farmers committing suicides, the Telangana government has decided to hike compensation for the victims of such deaths from Rs. 1.5 lakhs to Rs. 6 lakhs.
The decision was taken after a five-hour cabinet meeting that discussed farmer suicide deaths and agriculture crisis in the Telangana districts this kharif season, said reports.

The hiked compensation would be effective 'prospectively' from Sept 19.

However, the move has called for severe controversies as those families where farmers killed themselves before Sept 19 will get only Rs. 1.5 lakh as compensation.
